The Disparity Between Post Civil War Gowns And The Previous Ones

By Celia Hall

The fashion industry is the most dynamic of all industries in the world economy. This is why what was fashionable in like ten years ago is something considered outdated. However, sometimes most clothes or shoes in market today are a replica of past fashions, only altered in one way or another. Post civil war gowns are also different in many aspects. The materials used are more refined, better designs are cropping up every day among other things. Unlike the past times when wearing petticoats was almost a ritual, girls and women these days prefer pants and skinny wear. Some of the distinct features of the pre-war gowns are highlighted below.

During the pre-war periods, garments like day dresses were necessary for every woman. Apart from the wives of nobles and kings, the average common woman had a couple of such dresses and at least one or two to wear on special occasions such as church services, visiting relatives and such like things. These special dresses could only be worn during those specific days. They also owned petticoats and other undergarments. Privacy slips and covers could be spotted in their wardrobes.

Unlike the common woman who had to contend with few dresses, the rich women on the other hand were well endowed. Most of them had many dresses, of different designs. Special and formal events like balls were graced with unique gowns made in expensive materials like silk. They also wore corsets and petticoats just like the other common women.

Each season and weather pattern had its own clothing type as well. This included parasols, mostly worn to shade an individual from sun or even rain drizzles. Bonnets were also popular as accessories or even as a measure against adverse weather patterns. Jewelry was highly valued, but most women used flowers and lockets.

Hair was usually donned with flowers. These women patted their hair in the middle and let their hair fall down in different styles. Pomades and oils were used to part it and keep it in place. They also used snoods and bun covers that were very stylish in the day.

Shoes were also found in different unique designs. Most women during this era did not have the luxury of owning many different shoe types. They used a pair for different occasions. This is quite different from the modern woman of this century.

Some of the popular shoes war the lace up boots made in European style. These were comfortable and could be worn on various occasions. The war effects however changed everything, and most of them would dress in uncomfortable shoe types made in coarse materials.

Fashion dominates the world. Both the post civil war gowns and those prior to the war are distinct in their unique ways. In most cases, the designs made today are a reflection of the past designs. They are often altered in one way or another to suit the modern woman. However, despite the challenges of the previous era, woman in those times were graceful and tasteful in their dressing styles.
