What One Needs To Know Concerning A White Turban

By Freda Watts

A white turban is similar to other turbans and is used to protect the hair from pollutants and dirt. They are also referred to as pagri, bulle, or dastar in various regions of the world. Besides white, turbans also come in a broad variety of colors such as blue, red, yellow, green, pink, black, brown, and gray among others. Some contain patterns while some contain a mixture of colors.

The main wearers of white dastars are the Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and some Christians. These head coverings are used in almost all regions of the world and are gaining greater popularity with time. They are broadly used in various parts of Asia, the Middle East, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, eastern and northern Africa, parts of Europe, and, the Americas.

In Afghanistan and other Muslim states, it has been rendered part of the national cloth. In such states, where it is viewed as part of national dress, every citizen is supposed to wear it. People who do not tie them are considered as outcasts and might be targets of assault by community. Religious heads are also required to tie them whether they are on duty or not.

Among the Sikhs, these headdresses are treated with great respect. The Sikhs have beliefs that wearing of the bulles is fulfillment of Holy Scripture according the religion. They take it as their duty to always tie and to protect the dastars for their whole lives. This happens more especially after going through initiation that qualifies youths as Sikhs.

During the initiation, youths have some fragrance sprinkled on their heads as required by their faith. The perfume is a holy substance and so by spraying it on the heads, the heads are also rendered holy. Holy hair must then to be maintained in that state by wrapping it using pagris for the whole time the initiates are alive.

Pagri protects hair and maintains it clean from cigarette smoke and cigarette itself, which are considered as pollutants. Initiates are also not supposed to smoke or associate closely with smokers. Since cigarette is never permitted to come into contact with hair, heads are safeguarded by covering them with dastars. Other society members also regard bulle wearers as well behaved and holy people.

The headgear also signifies the social, political, and religious responsibilities one has been charged with. The color and style used by different social groups may vary depending on the region in question. The bulle may also be worn differently in various occasions such as parties, weddings, funerals, and other social functions. They come in varying shapes and sizes to suit various applications.

Tying a white turban can be done by a single person, but with the help of another person, it is done faster and better. It requires some skills, to tie the bulle correctly. Some individuals offer the necessary skills in small businesses for a small fee. A white turban in specific observation symbolizes high spirituality and holiness of wearers. By observation, it is mostly worn by old very religious folks as opposed to young people.
