Alicia Keys Style Icon

By Abigail Collins

Prominent on the R&B scene, Alicia Keys has been a very visible presence not just in music circles, in which she was awarded the title of being one of the greatest of modern musical artists, but has also been causing a splash in both Holywood and on the fashion track, in which she has played notable roles and earned critical praise for her dress sense and jewellery sense. She has also shown us her better side, and has done much fund-raising with her music for charitable causes.

The last ten years or so have been very good to Alicia Keys and that's because she's been very good to us, releasing a string of hit singles, albums, and dance tunes that have fuelled the night scene for the 00' decade and beyond. But Keys also likes to give the fashion world something to think about with her own unique sense of style that catches the photographers eyes at the events she attends.

It was at a charity event, the Keep a Child Alive Black Ball in June, where Keys was able to make a statement that she was up to date with the fashion scene. She stepped out in a resplendent shoulderless gown with a feather train, and she was even able to balance the softness of the fabric with heavy jewellery and accessories, like a spiked metal belt, showing us that she has the sense to dress well and for accessorising competently.

The singer also has a bold side, and will not shy away from going beyond the norm and the trends to be herself and wear what she finds to be comfortable. At the Fashion Shows of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, she made a unpretentious appearance in a simple white jacket, black skirt, and leggings, also choosing to do the bravest thing one can do in glamour fashion; skip the make-up. Even without cosmetics, Keys still looked every inch the fashion icon and though she was unable to go without some kind of jewellery, gold rings in this case, it was a daring statement that declared her status as a natural beauty.

It's little surprise that Keys can hardly bear to be without a piece or two considering her love of jewellery which in 2009 had her try her hand in designing the stuff, courtesy of Gisle Therault, with her aim being to provide people with 'beautiful, unique pieces...that ignite them to find the best within'. The collection, titled 'The Barber's Daughter', is unique in that small poems are inscribed onto each piece, making them perhaps live up to the lofty yet sweet aspirations of their creator.

If there is one golden rule with jewellery, though, it's that diamonds are a girl's best friend and Keys has proven no exception to this rule. Among the pieces she chooses to wear, the diamond is probably the most commonly recurring, and at the aptly titled 'Alicia Keys and her Piano' concert in Paris she showed off some sparkle with pieces from the prominent De Beers collection; with well over a hundred diamonds being worn by the singer.

Her track record for the last ten years is an impressive one, but considering how well things have gone and are going for Keys why stop? Just last June she put in many performances including one for the 2011 BET Awards and celebrated the tenth anniversary of her piano-themed album 'Songs in A Minor'; perhaps not the driving force behind her fame, but it's great to see that she remembers her roots and is still willing to pay homage to what is surely still an essential part of who she is.

Her upcoming roles in Disney projects, along with her recent showings that prove her sense and love of style and jewellery is still very strong, paints a very bright picture for the future of the singer, actress, and designer; a future that will undoubtedly be shared by all the lucky lovers of the fashion and music scene.
