Rap Artists: Being Members of the Hip-Hop Record Companies

By Farah Fan

Rap Artists, these are the most typical job people are looking for in the hip-hop music business. It is not, obviously, the position with the most openings. Although, not all people can become performers in their own right, it is not the end of the world. Sometimes, there would be jobs in the industry that would be perfect for you.

Here are a few of them: Booking Agent - will be in control of obtaining the artist work or "booking" the artist's shows. There are numerous types of agents and some do very well financially; Club Owner - The right club in the right place may bring in a lot of money; Dance Instructor - If you are skilled at hip hop dance you might want to consider seeking other forms of dance and exercise as well to sharpen your overall abilities; Disc Jockey - There is no specific degree required to be a DJ but many nowadays have at least studied music appreciation/theory through some form of higher learning; Entrepreneur - Start a magazine, a website, a hip hop advertising organization, a record label, clothing line, or maybe every one of them.

Graphic Design Artist - In addition to the great graphic design jobs and innovative marketing positions available out there for those who go after this field in college or trade school, graphics skills can come in extremely handy when doing your own marketing as an artist or entrepreneur; Lawyer - Intellectual property lawyers and/or Transactional lawyers are highly sought after in all sorts of fields ; Manager - An "entertainment" manager's duties will vary but if you will be representing talent you will essentially have to be able to do the following: Interface with companies & employees, coordinate and negotiate amusement booking, ensure timely execution of contracts and payments, make site trips at performances to insure musician satisfaction, list and track schedules, provide site/venue information on an as needed basis and provide necessary information to permit appropriate departments to provide successful performances; and Magazine Writer/Editor - You can also go your own route and create your own magazine.

Even though you only want to become a rapper or MC, it would be recommended that you familiarize yourself with the various "music industry jobs". Dabble in them a little and understand them primarily because you will be needed to communicate with some, if not all of them in one way or any other if you choose to pursue a career in music. It is essential that you comprehend some jobs (manager, song writer, producer, booking agent, etc.) as a method of "learning the ropes" of the music business.

Nowadays, being one of the greatest rap artists and giving people what they want don't look to be the same thing. If people like Soulja Boy and Plies can get record deals and top the charts, skill and artistry must not matter much when it comes to commericial success. The most well-known music seems to be simple and recurring songs about womanizing and money.
