This is an absolute must. On your next trip to Palm Springs and the California desert resort cities, be sure to stop by the iconic Melvyn's Restaurant located at the Ingleside Inn in downtown Palm Springs. Considered one of the best bed and breakfasts in world and featured on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" as well as "60 Minutes" Melvyn's has been the frequented by everyone from Frank Sinatra to presidents and kings.
These days the draw at Melvyn's is "Dinner With" a monthly celebrity driven speaker series. Now in its fourth year, this ongoing series has hosted some of Hollywood's most notable celebrities including; Carol Channing, Stefanie Powers, Dyan Cannon, Margaret O'Brien, Tippi Hedren, Tony Curtis, Dick Van Patten, Elinor Donahue, Susan Stafford, Mickey Rooney as well as well known authors and musicians.
For over thirty five (35) years Melvyn's namesake, Mel Haber, has owned the restaurant and the Ingleside Inn bed and breakfast in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. This historical site has been visited by the crme-de-la-creme of Hollywood. Over the years June Allison had her wedding reception at the Inn and Frank and Barbara Sinatra held their pre-wedding party at Melvyn's to name just a few of the celebrity events that found a home at this iconic location.
Ingleside guests have included a "Who's Who" of Hollywood. People like John Travolta, Marlon Brando, Clark Gable with Carol Lombarde, Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Patrick MacNee, Shecky Greene, Debbie Reynolds, Connie Stevens, Goldie Hahn and Virginia Madsen. Lily Pons and Andre Kostelanetz came to the Ingleside Inn for the night and spent the next 13 years there. It has all the amenities of home, a very nice home.
Today the "Dinner With" speaker series is the hot ticket in town with many of the guests appearing on local television. The meal itself is a culinary delight which consists of a three (3) course dinner for an intimate group of between 70 and 80. The diners can "meet and greet" the celebrity get autographs, take pictures and hear about life in Hollywood. The dinner starts at 6:00 p.m. followed by a talk from the celebrity guest and a lively question and answer period.
There is more to come. Currently slated for future appearance at the "Dinner With" series include Jack Jones, Norm Crosby, Ruta Lee, Ernest Borgnine, Julie Newmar and Connie Stevens to name just a few.
You really get some bang for your buck. The night I went the cost for the event, including dinner, tax and tip was only $65.00, well worth it to meet one of my childhood favorites, Mickey Rooney, and have dinner at one of the most famous places in all the desert.
If nothing else stop in at the bar at Melvyn's where you can see pictures of Hollywood royalty from days gone by. The Ingleside Inn and Melvyn's "Dinner With" speaker series is a must stop on your next vacation to Palm Springs and the California desert cities.
