Gemstone Necklace Designs By Native American Artists

By Myrna Holder

For hundreds of years Native Americans have used gemstones in their artwork. A gemstone is a piece of cut and polished stone. Turquoise, Amber, and Tigers-Eye are just a few examples of a gemstone. Gemstone necklace designs are considered by many to be some of the most beautiful to choose from.

People seem to enjoy the different colors, shapes, and uniqueness found in a gemstone. They hold sentimental value for a lot of individuals. A vast number of people believe some stones have healing powers, can cure diseases, and keep you healthy. Others have the belief that certain stones can bring you fame or wealth.

One of the things Native Americans are known for is their beautiful jewelry making. They have kept this craft authentic throughout centuries by one generation teaching it to the next generation, that generation then teaching the next generation, and so on, and so forth. They take a great deal of pride in making sure their work will last for years and that it is of high quality.

It is hard to imagine how much time and effort is put into handcrafted jewelry. This is not something that is made in a factory on a machine. Every single detail is made by hand. It sometimes can take as long as weeks to finish one piece, to complete the bead work on one necklace, and to add the leather and feathers to one bracelet.

An idea for a necklace or piece of jewelry usually starts with a request from a customer or from the creativity of the artist. The artist will sometimes draw a rough draft of what the necklace will look like. Then the artist will decide what type of stone or other material to use. In some cases you will see leather, bones, feathers, and beads in the design. After a lot of time and effort on the artist part, a lovely piece of artwork is designed!
