Different Styles Of Turban Wrapping

By Margarita Joseph

Turbans are a type of headgear worn by men and women of various communities, for example the Muslims. In a nutshell, they are basically made up of long strips of cloth. Apart from the Muslims, the Hindus as well wear the them, but only during special ceremonies and occasions. Moreover, a certain group of Christians in various parts of the world have also adapted turban wrapping into their daily mode of dressing.

As like any type of clothing, turbans comes in different shapes, sizes and colors. The people affiliated with this type of head-wear believe that it represents complete commitment to their own higher consciousness. It also shows that they are different from others since it gives them a distinct appearance.

Patience is a virtue right? Well you will need it when tying this piece of cloth. To put the strands of cloth into what you see people wearing takes some time, and therefore a little perseverance comes in handy. There are several styles wrapping up the clothing.

Among the various methods is the double wide style. Used by the Indian men of Punjab, the piece of clothing (preferably six meters long) is cut into two equal pieces and sewn together. The result is a larger turban that is made up of few wraps.

There is also the Warrior Style method. By now, from the suggestive name, you can tell there is the idea of war being related to this kind of style. Indeed, it was worn by Sikhs when heading for battle. No specific or particular measurements are required here neither is color. Simply, a knot is used to hold it to the head of the wearer and is usually placed at the front. It is quite hectic though very wearable. As stated earlier, your patience is put to the test.

Among these methods is common technique used to tie the head-dress. This is quite a usual way of doing the wrapping. At this point, one needs some clothing that has been previously starched, and make sure it is very long. It goes with a patka that is worn underneath the turban to prevent it from falling, and is commonly worn by the Sikh too.

One can also go for the House style. For women, the piece of clothing is roughly three meters long and they wear it when they wake up early in the morning for meditation or when they are exercising. On the other hand, when it comes to men, the piece of cloth is about 1.5-2 meters long, although this will vary depending on whether one wants a single wrap around or a few. This style is also used by children when they are around the house or engaging in some kind of sport.

To sum it all up, there are these among many other methods of turban wrapping. The only difference is the wearer and his personal taste, religion, status, age, purpose, time, place just to name but a few. Color is also determined by these factors.
