Cheryl Cole Style Icon

By Abigail Collins

Living proof that the reality-TV format of shows such as Pop Idol and, later, X-Factor can churn out international super-stars, Cheryl Cole has carved a name for herself from humble beginnings in Newcastle council estates to the worldwide stage as a singer and fashion icon and an instantly-recognisable celebrity. Her stint as an X-Factor judge as well as her time with the girl band Girls Aloud has cemented her as a household name across the world and the unique look of the 27yr-old fashionista has long been a cause of envy among her peers.

The singer shot to fame as the lead singer of the manufactured girl band 'Girls Aloud', which was formed with the conclusion of Popstars the Rivals, on which Cheryl Cole was a part. After achieving worldwide success with the band, she went on to produce her own number one albums as a solo performer and has been a regular headliner both with the press and in fashion circles, always causing a stir with her style and fiery temper.

Before being replaced by Nicole Sherzinger on the judging panel for the 2011 US X-Factor, Cole was seen in Chicago sporting a Alice & Olivia-style cap and red/white checked coat with navy shorts. Cole has never been a stranger to standing out, as her outfit of purple flares, orange blouse, cyan belt, and huge hair proved during auditions for the X-Factor tour and the look has been copied by others, such as Jessica Alba at the CFDA Awards recently.

The real love of Cole's life however, aside from the jewellery and a certain away-game footballer, lies in jewellery and in 2010 she bounced back from contracting malaria just to help launch her designer range 'Promise' rings, named after her hit single 'Promise This', for luxury jewel firm de Grisogono and has spawned countless imitators with her trademark style of bangles, dangling charm earrings and visible-strap watches.

Her true penchant, though, lies with interesting rings ranging from the stylish to the fun and bold such as a ruby-skull ring worn with heavy chain necklaces though she won't veer too far into bling unless it's fun bling, perhaps wanting to use her natural charms more than relying on overly gaudy pieces, with jewellery to compliment rather than out-shout.

The jewellery of Cheryl Cole reflects Cheryl Cole, as you might expect. She can switch from glamorous and elegant pieces to fun and daring ones, and is not adverse to wearing items such as ruby-skull rings, heavy necklaces, and other bits of bling. She will veer more toward accentuating her natural charm with subtle pieces, but sometimes she likes to go overboard and just have fun.

More recently, her collections have welcomed newcomer Bibi Bijoux into the fold and its more skulls and tribal themes for the bangles and rings she wears from this collection, and the endorsement the new brand will enjoy thanks to Cole's public flaunting of the new pieces will certainly not hurt their business none; such is the power and influence of Cheryl Cole's fashion.

These have been turbulent times for Cheryl Cole, but the singer and fashionista is still going strong and her image is still one of the most sought-after in the world. Her fan-base has proved incredibly supportive following the break-down of her marriage and X-Factor presence and it is more than likely that Cole will be back on top soon, probably with another designer range or hit album as she does the things she loves. Following her birthday, due at the end of June, here's hoping that the fortunes of the singing fashion mega-star improve.
