Who is the Best American Rock Band in History?

By Mark Armstrong

I just came across an article from a few years ago that stated that Americans chose Pearl Jam as the greatest American rock band of all-time in a survey. Don't get me wrong - I really like Eddie Vedder and the rest of the band, but I was shocked to see Pearl Jam as number one!

It might be one thing if they were referring to the best alternative band, or if they polled people 30 years old and younger, asking them who the best American rock band of their lifetimes was. It wasn't that though.

Then I started thinking about things. Who would normally be chosen as the best rock bands of all time? The Beatles. Perhaps some would go with Led Zeppelin. Others might choose a band like the Rolling Stones.

That's when it dawned on me. All of those bands are British, and so are others who might come to mind. I'm a big fan of The Band, but they were Canadian.

There are a handful of other bands that one could consider, like Guns 'N Roses, Bon Jovi, REM, Nirvana, and a handful of additional ones, but none compared to Pearl Jam.

I was truly stumped. Was there really no one better than Pearl Jam when it came to American rock history?

Not only were they big in the 90s, but they're still producing some great music today. Take their latest release, Backspacer, for example. This album is packed with catchy songs, and almost 20 years later, the band has produced one of it's best records yet.

Music lovers also praised the fact that Pearl Jam has stayed true to its own musical interests, never caving into the wishes of major labels. They say that Pearl Jam has always kept ticket prices reasonable, and continues to have a great time churning out new music to this day.
