Karan Johar's love affair - The United Kingdom

By Rohini Nadia

The son of the late Yash Johar and one of the most sought-after directors today, Karan Johar has managed to steal the hearts of many with his exceptional films. Hailing from a strong filmy background, Karan Johar is known for his soul-touching stories and star-packed films. He has been recognized as one of the few directors who have managed to strike gold with nearly every release, rolling out some of Bollywood's highest grossing films in India and abroad.

Karan Johar started his work in the film industry by first appearing on screen for the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995, and later worked as an assistant director for Aditya Chopra before finally breathing life into his own creations. The filmmaker has also shot major parts of his film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in London, simply due to his attachment to the city.

In the film, Karan Johar has captured places like Wales Millennium Centre, Bluewater Complex, Kent, Blenheim Palace, St Paul's Cathedral and also the banks of the River Thames. The film features a star-packed cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor and received critical acclaim when released in 2001. Karan Johar was reported to have spent nearly Rs. 40 crore for the film which in turn was crowned the highest-grossing film abroad at the time.

Karan Johar was also selected as the Goodwill Tourism Ambassador for Visit Britain and was officially invited to the 2012 London Olympics. The director has also made an appearance on a video shot for Visit Britain that was aired a few months ago. Apart from the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Karan Johar was the only Indian to have been officially invited to the event. Quoting Karan, "I've been shooting non-stop for my film Student of the Year and the TV show that I'm judging. Life has been very hectic. When this invitation came through, I jumped at the opportunity. After all, it's a very prestigious event."

The director has announced his next directorial venture, Student of the Year, also his first film without a star-packed cast. With fresh faces Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan playing the lead, the film is a step away from Karan Johar's usual movie-making trend. It is a story about three students competing against each other to win a school trophy. Releasing on 19th of October, it has been considered to be the most anticipated movie of the year.
