Student of the Year's "The Disco Song" sets feet tapping!

By Rohini Nadia

When Karan Johar sets out to direct a film, you're bound to have one with extravagant performances, catchy songs and addictive dance-steps. Previously, the director had roped in several choreographers and music-directors to give his films an icing-on-the-cake. Till date, the producer-director has directed four films and produced several more. Karan Johar the son of the late founder of Dharma Productions, Yash Johar, has included Jatin-Lalit, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and more recently one of the most sought-after music-directors, Vishal-Shekhar.

As always, Karan Johar wanted his upcoming film's first song to be a punchy number, and had the video where one can Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt shaking their leg to the tune. The song sports portions of the late Pakistani singer Nazia Hassan's Disco Deewane released in 1981. A pop number produced by Indian producer Biddu, the song went on to break sales records in South-East Asia, selling nearly 1,00,000 records within a day.

The Disco Song's chorus features Nazia Hassan's dream-like vocals while the rest of the song has been completely restructured by Vishal Shekhar. The composers have also successfully managed to add a serious groove to the song, without compromising on the original parts sung by Hassan. The Disco Song also includes a vocal track by Benny Dayal and Sunidhi Chauhan.

This Karan Johar film comes with punchy tracks, nearly all of which you could shake a leg to. Other songs in the album include Ratta Maar, Radha and Kukkad, sung by Shahid Mallya. The film also packs a track called "Mashup of the Year" by DJ Kiran Kamath and various artists. The music of the film was well received, with the first two music-promos spreading across web-space like a wildfire.

Student of the Year is Karan Johar's fifth directorial venture after his first Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), followed by Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) and My Name Is Khan (2010). The film is also Karan Johar's first without his lucky mascot and buddy Shah Rukh Khan, who has made an appearance in all the movies previously directed by the filmmaker. The Siddharth Malhotra-starrer "Student of the Year" will release on the 19th of October 2012.
