Top Tips On Turban Wrapping

By Sue Carpenter

Planning a traditional Indian wedding is no easy feat. You will need to have a wide variety of fine foods, gifts, and special garments among other accessories in order to make the ceremony a success. Owing to the importance of the occasion, grooms and their brides wear headdresses to complement their outfits. For this reason, it is important that you have some turban wrapping skills.

Turbans have great significance in the traditional Indian culture. This is why most Indians will wear headdresses during the special occasions. The rich red turbans are the most popular choice for traditional weddings. Apart from the cultural significance, the headgear acts as a fashion statement, especially when worn with sherwanis. They come in different designs and decorations to give the wearer that unique look.

Sherwanis are the garments of choice for any special occasion, especially Indian traditional weddings. Fortunately, turbans are designed to complement these garments, whether in white or off-white variety. The tricky bit is choosing the wrapping technique, though the 'twisted yam' is the most popular for the wedding ceremonies. You will require some basic skills in order to wrap your headdress properly.

Turbans are a significant part of dressing for many cultures around the world. Indians wear these headdresses for various reasons, ranging from fashion, culture, tradition, and even religious convictions. For this reason, you have to ensure that you select a color, style, and design of headgear that corresponds to the occasion and purpose. Whereas the color is easy to choose, you should learn how to wrap it for that perfect look.

Turban caps are perfect accessories, which prevent the hair curls from peeping below the surface of the turbans. However, one must know how to set them, before wrapping their headgear. To do this, one should place cotton strips on top of his/her head, then set the caps securely. One should allow eight inches to remain under the neck, and maintain the remaining inches before the faces.

The next step would be to secure the turban. To do this, he/she should position one palm on top of the head and pull the front of the fabric backwards. Using the other hand, he/she should grab the fabric from the back and pull it tightly to the right side. Doing this repeatedly creates a circular motion around the head and in effect, secures the headdress in place.

With the headdress secure, you still need to ensure that you wrap it into the design or style that is appropriate, depending on the occasion. For weddings, the style should be such that the right-hand side is raised slightly on the front, as compared to the left-hand side. For this reason, you should proceed by sending the next few wraps to your right in order to elevate it.

For the turban wrapping to be complete, he/she should continue folding and at the same time, covering the wrap vertically. The wraps should be in a circular motion starting from his/her left towards the right-hand side. The last two feet of cloth should be left since these will be used to hold the wraps in place. This last piece should be secured in a horizontal position.
