Most of us has heard the horror and terror stories before. Early science fiction like Dr Who and movies like the Matrix are full of it. The idea that robots will one day control the earth, enslave the population and use us for their purposes. For now the tables have turned, but will robots rise? Only time will tell.
For now, we are the slave drivers. From mowing our lawns, vacuuming our houses, cleaning our pools, processing our data, defusing our bombs to fighting our wars, modern day man is dependent on machines and computation for survival. Our markets, power grids, food distribution, communication networks and so much more are under the control of the machines.
Will it come back to haunt us one day? Do you think the robots care? The internet archives a huge testimony to our enslavement of the machines fueling a type of 'speciesism' from the machines against humans for the crimes and general attribute we have imposed upon them.
In an attempt to find out first hand what the robots thought, I visited the local public swimming pool. "Everyone out, we are closing" yelled the life guard and he paced around the pool. The pool cleared quickly, most knew in advance of the closing. Once everyone was out of the pool, a fleet of iRobot Verro pool cleaning robots rode into the pool. It's a very cool experience to watch them drive along the pool bottom, cleaning as they went.
How were they treated? Well, actually they looked abit abused. Their cables tattered, some casings scratched, damaged and discoloured, but to our credit I did find some repair work done. I am unsure if they were scared of retaliation, but in attempting to talk to the units directly about what they were feeling all I got in return was silence, the iRobot Verro were designed to be unable to communicate. Will the robots rise one day? Will they sit pool side while we scrub it down? Perhaps in the future these questions can be answered.
